The list of Portuguese players to have signed for Valencia CF was extended further with the signing of Thierry Correia on Monday night. One of his fellow countrymen whom he joins in achieving the accolade is Helder Postiga, who has played for both clubs represented by Correia during his fledgling career: The striker spent four years at Sporting CP and featured for Valencia CF in 2013/14.
Postiga spoke to VCF Media Radio on Tuesday to give his opinion on the deadline day move, and reveal more details about what fans at Mestalla can expect from the new arrival.
"Correia is a young player, a very attacking fullback, and somebody who has an amazing future ahead of him because he has quality and plenty of room for improvement. I hope and wish that he continues to grow at Valencia CF," said the Portuguese, who retired in 2016.
"He has always played for his national team at youth level, and he is going to find that the club help him to grow."
"He's very similar to (former VCF player) Joao Cancelo. They both like to attack. There's been Cancelo, Miguel Brito, Joao Pereira... Thierry should continue forging his own path and creating his own identity. He has a lot of quality, but he needs time to adapt; it's the first time that he's left Portugal, and people need to be patient."
"He's very fast and he progressed quickly at Sporting CP due to injuries to other players. He's got great potential to improve and I'm sure that he will be a good signing for Valencia CF," said Postiga, emphatically.
"Every player wants to be a full international for their country. There are a lot of quality players in his position for Portugal, but I'm sure that Thierry will get closer to a cap if he is playing for Valencia CF."
As for his advice to the young talent, Postiga says that effort is key.
"He should give his all for the club. The fans don't forget those who give everything on the pitch. The best image you can have is of someone who is fully dedicated to the club."
